“Help us! Please, somebody, help us!” Damon yelled out the window as we rounded the corner into the hospital’s ambulance bay. Two doctors ran towards us from the automated sliding doors, their blue gowns swishing against their scrubs. I slid further under the woolen blanket in the trunk, hiding from the doctors.

“What’s wrong?” the first man yelled through the window. I imagined Damon threw his thumb over his shoulder so that it pointed at Jax’s head that rested on the window.

“He collapsed about fifteen minutes ago.”

I heard the woosh of the door as the doctors threw it open, and the metallic buzz of a drone racing out from the doors to collect his body. Its padded forked arms squeaked against the leather seat sliding under Jax and gingerly lifting him onto the gurney that the doctors had brought out. The car bounced as Damon slid from the driver’s seat and raced after the gurney that held Jax’s seemingly lifeless form. Oh, so he’s just going to leave me here to fend for myself? Typical, I guess, for all those asshole, self serving men, I thought, rolling my eyes in the darkness.

I waited until all sounds had disappeared then counted to one thousand before uncovering my head. I peaked out of the rear window, but the only sign of movement I could detect was a plastic bag floating on the gusty winds. I was stuck at an impasse. If I tried to turn them in, but they caught me in the act, they’d kill me and my baby. I could succeed, guaranteeing my baby’s life, but I would still be stuck in the facility, or even worse. On the other hand, if I continued to help them, they might begin to trust me and eventually agree to spare my life. Then, maybe I’d gain my freedom and escape this wretched society with my baby’s future and my own still intact. I inhaled, and my eyes drooped closed for a split second before I pried them back open with sheer willpower. I knew what I had to do.

I climbed over the back seats dragging the blanket over with me then pulled open the side door. Quietly I tiptoed across the ambulance bay, crouching low to the ground and sliding along the ridged brick wall at the end of the cul-de-sac scraping the backs of my arms. The door slid open as a doctor walked out holding a cigarette, and I quickly pulled the grey blanket around me, squeezing a few pity tears from my eyes.

“Please help me! My stomach- it just hurts so bad! Someone, please!”

I keeled over, covering my bump with the blanket and my shivering hands. The doctor sprang into action just as I’d hoped, running back inside to grab help. I staggered to the door after the doctor, triggering its motion sensored jaws again, but before I could cross the threshold, Damon stepped out in front of me.

“Oh honey! I’ve been looking for you!”

I tried to keep up the act.
